Cuban vocalist Daymé Arocena is a force of nature. She’s not Aretha, of course — but that’s the kind of effect she has. On the new album she’s featuring in tonight’s program, she goes pop. But I wouldn’t worry: in places like Cuba, genre distinctions don’t bear much weight — and in any event, it seems like Arocena can sing anything.

Contemporaneous is understandably pushing the world premiere on this program of an orchestral song cycle by Lila Meretzky setting the Yiddish poetry of Anna Margolin (and sung, no less, by Lucy Dhegrae and Milena Gligić). But it’s hard not to also get excited by a piece extracted as a standalone from one of his epic works-in-progress by Dylan Mattingly, who has to be the most fun Maximalist around. Not to mention something by Shelley Washington.

Liz Durette started out kind of doing jazz, but has moved more into experimental electronics. She says the music on her new album is supposed to invoke the French Baroque, but I’m still waiting to hear it. I find the Electropop of Asher White consistently winning because it’s twee on purpose. Anastasia Coope is a rare Psych-Folk singer-songwriter whose songs are actually good — maybe because she’s sure to let them space out.

35th Street at 4th Avenue, Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn
$7 or more for soundtrack
TICKETS + INFORMATION
One of the first shows that you could actually Go Out! to back in the days of The Lockdown (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City.

What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

Joseph Keckler’s cabaret opera should never work. But it somehow does. For this show, he’s joined by Grace Bergere, who is one of those Rockish singer-songwriters who still somehow manages to be kind of good (in her case because she’s as interested in creating dark compelling textures as she is in wallowing in whatever her immediate problems might be).

In a healthy American classical music culture, Joan Tower would be as well-known and loved as Aaron Copland: her music has the same craft and direct appeal. But we don’t live in such a culture, so we’re stuck with specialist shows like this.

The beginning of series curated by trombonist Kalia Vandever, who is one of the people really moving jazz forward into realms that don’t sound like what you’ve heard before (in her case, uniquely restful, like post-post-Bop without edges, or Ambient Minimalism with a pulse). For this first edition, she couldn’t have chosen better co-explorers than guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and violinist Darian Donovan Thomas.

On the inner edge of Listability, but no worse for that. Justin Peck setting Nico Muhly seems right for here. Tiler Peck (no relation) is a technically spectacular dancer — Fitzgerald to Sara Mearns’s Holiday, Sutherland to Sara Mearns’s Callas — but you wonder what kind of choreographer she’ll be; setting Poulenc is one sure way to This List’s heart, though. Alexei Ratmansky’s Odesa is definitely not the kind of thing we List here (as much as we enjoy Ratmansky’s work in our personal capacity) — but Jewish gangsters in Odessa is a theme we can certainly get behind (wish the gang rape were presented more critically, though; Ratmansky’s done better in other pieces).

What I wrote about Amy Williams five years ago remains true today: Amy Williams is a composer I've been kind of crazy for lately. Her work is kinetic, but also pays attention to such trad concerns as harmony and development. For tonight’s showcase of chamber music for strings sometimes with piano, Williams — an excellent pianist — has the inestimable advantage of being joined by the peerless JACK Quartet.

How many Bach pieces can be justly called “delightful”? The secular Coffee Cantata is one, playfully recounting familial conflict over the then-new-to-Europe stimulant (the fuel for virtually all subsequent classical music). Don’t worry: this performance, with the music arranged and the libretto translated by Geoffrey McDonald, appears to be “immersive” only insofar as it’s presented in a coffee shop (come to think of it, the original performance in the 1730s was, too) and you drink coffee while watching it.

If you wanna know the God’s honest truth, this List, for all its Baroquemania, isn’t particularly fond of the “firey” technique-oriented strain of Italian Baroque violin music: it’s really not that different from the Romantic rot of a Paganini. But here it is, anyway.

Jessie Montgomery is, in this List’s estimation, the best Western classical composer for string instruments around right now. So a new solo violin piece from her is something to be excited about. STUPID DEFINITIVE HYPERBOLIC ASSERTION ALERT: Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp is the best piece of Western classical chamber music written in the 20th Century. Reis’s reduction of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony for piano quartet is, dare I say, not as good as the original (although it does make it easier to hear how strange this music must have sounded when it was new).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Gabriel’s lost a lot of its charm when it moved to its new Central Park South location. But they can still fix a proper Martini, I’ll tell you that.

When I first encountered guitarist Paco de Lucía in the 1970s, I couldn’t stand his music (at least that I heard). He was mainly known in the United States for participation in Jazz-Rock Fusion bands, and he seemed as barrenly technique-driven as everybody else in the decadent period of that movement. He was promoted here as having come out of Flamenco — but who knew then that Flamenco was anything other a showbizzy form of canned folclórico? After I grew up, I learned the truth about Flamenco — and discovered the sensational string of albums de Lucía made with Camerón de la Isla in Spain at the same time de Lucía was doing that barren fusion stuff in the States. This wasn’t fusion, but an opening up of a great musical form to influences and inflections that nourished it. So simultaneously, de Lucía was helping create some of the most soulful music on the planet and some of the most soulless. Unfortunately (if predictably), this festival seems to concentrate on de Lucía’s fusion activities. Is it a coincidence that the one show that focuses on straightforward Flamenco (at the Cervantes Institute on Friday) is sold out?
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: These show are all over the place — but in Manhattan, so be careful.

Ensemble Connect does one of their typically piquant programs, combining inti figgis-vizueta, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Tania León with Beethoven. (The difference between a program like this and the ones where a new piece is tacked onto a bunch of Standard Rep is that here it’s Beethoven that’s tacked onto the contemporary stuff that’s the focus of the show, conveying the perhaps misleading impression that classical music has a pulse.)

In this one-man show, the fabulous David Greenspan plays a genderqueer teen who’s gone missing, his gay detective father — and the apparition of Theda Bara. If anyone could pull that off, it’s David Greenspan.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: When this piece played here a year ago as part of last year’s Exponential Festival, I remarked that Kellogg’s Diner would be great if only it were any good. Well guess what: having been taken over (and given a Tex-Mex twist) by the people who revived Old John’s Luncheonette, it is.

There’s no reason for Alvin Singleton not to be played as much as, say, John Adams. There used to be one — a very bad one — but as Singleton wryly notes, over the last few years he’s suddenly gotten played more than ever. Heather Christian presents a new feminine Mass, springing from the ideas of female Medieval mystics like Hildegard (duh) and Julian of Norwich and (NOT Medieval) Robin Wall Kimmerer), sung by a community chorus of caregivers and makers. As usual with Christian, the music will be eclectic — but instead of her frequent country-folk overtones, this time the inflections will come from Gospel and Neo-Soul.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Delicious pan-African at Teranga.
