Sunken Cages’s percussion-and-electronics are truly enjoyable (and viscerally affecting) without losing their intellectual bona fides.

Why does this sound so familiar? Oh wait. It was performed on Broadway in the late ‘70s and again in the ‘90s. An immersive — although they didn’t call it that then — exposition of an abusive teacher as a metaphor for dictatorship. Be sure to click through that link a couple of lines up for an example of Fukuyamaesqe naivité at its most Fukuyamaesquely naive (and “naive” is being charitable): not only has dictatorship returned to Russia, but it’s about to install itself here! I still remember this play as being rather lame — but then in 1977 if it wasn’t Richard Foreman I wasn’t really willing to accept it as valid theater (I don’t feel too differently now, TBH).

Seeing ancient Persian instruments and artwork displayed from Imperial storage in the Palace Museum in Nara, Japan, accordionist/composer Shoko Nagai wondered what it must have been like to hear Persian and Middle Eastern music, transported via the Silk Road, in Japan a thousand and more years ago. A couple of years ago, The Wooster Group asked Richard Foreman (the greatest theater artist I for one have ever experienced) if they could completely reimagine hisSymphony of Rats, a piece they had initially performed under Foreman’s direction in the 1980s, summarized by the auteur as, “a President of the United States is receiving messages by means other than the known senses, and he doesn't know whether to trust them or not”. Foreman told them, “You can do whatever you want! I hope it's completely unrecognizable.” You can see why they chose to redo it now.

Trisha Brown was one of the more successful Post-Modern choreographers at bulking up her style as money poured into the Downtown Arts Scene in the late 1970s and the 1980s. She was able convincingly to combine her abstract dance with big theatrical visuals, and to expand her movement vocabulary without vitiating it. We’ll see two such works on this program. Also, a new piece by Noé Soulier, who is similar to Brown in basing a style on sheer physical movement.

Daniel Temkin may not yet have developed the most individual compositional voice you could imagine, but his work is rewarding to listen to. His music very clearly connects to the past, but is equally clearly of the present: not completely unfamilar, but fresh.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: There’s a wine-and-cheese reception starting an hour before each show — but I never tire of complaining that, for the high price charged for these concerts, the abominable quality of the wine and the cheese is deplorable. In any event, good burgers at At The Wallace — but most exciting of all, I’ve heard it reported on good authority that the fried cheese curds are as good as in Wisconsin.

$105-$225
TICKETS + INFORMATION
Choreographer Justin Peck and and the great playwright Jackie Sibblies “Fairview” Drury took Sufjan Stevens’s terrific album Illinois and crafted a story around its songs, which Peck then choreographed. And, surprisingly only because Sibblies Drury is so brilliant, they came up with something bland and reductive (which is why it’s transferring to Broadway). The musical performance, though — arrangements by Timo Andres — is stunning.

TICKETS + INFORMATION
One of the first shows that you could actually Go Out! to back in the days of The Lockdown (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City.

What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

I dislike the idea of Tengger — a Pan-Asian couple (whatever that means: there are only two of them, and Asia is a very big continent) who travel the world playing New Agey music with their young son dancing in front of them — but I can’t deny the music. Harmonium, electronics, and toy instruments (which the boy plays when he’s not dancing): instrumentation that’s right up my alley. And the music is bright and affecting — not the insipid drivel you’d fear (while remaining very spacey) (thank Whomever).

Chou Wen-Chung was a great composer. He composed music deeply informed by Chinese scales and techniques for Western instruments. But it doesn’t come across as any kind of contrived “fusion”: it sounds like music as Chou heard it. And it’s endlessly compelling, even gorgeous. It’s only fitting for the University where Chou taught for so long (and so influentially) to pay him this tribute.

Michael Stephen Brown is not only a fine, bracing composer (even if he didn’t write “Walk Away Renée”) — he's an excellent pianist as well. Tonight he presents a wide-ranging, well-put-together program, including some Haydn (the world’s most underrated and underperformed famous composer); some tributes to Haydn by Ravel, Debussy, and Brown himself; Ravel’s Mirroirs (as I said, Brown’s an excellent pianist); some Mendelssohn and some Von Schauroth, a forgotten pianist-composer whom Mendelssohn considered marrying; and a bigger piece by Brown himself (as far as I’m concerned, we don’t hear Brown’s compositions enough).

Martin Nevin’s compositions Sound In Jazz. But they drag rather than swing: an interesting sound. This is a song cycle to poems by Jonathan C. Creasy, a longtime collaborator.

Choreographer Justin Peck and and the great playwright Jackie Sibblies “Fairview” Drury took Sufjan Stevens’s terrific album Illinois and crafted a story around its songs, which Peck then choreographed. I’m not much for imposing narratives on record albums — but this is quite an album. When they get to the song about losing a loved one to cancer (a subject I know a thing or two about), I don’t think I’ll be able to contain myself.

Aesop’s Sound Fables: Our Hospitality

TICKETS + INFORMATION
Notwithstanding the charms of Aesop’s Sound Fables, the ensemble that is live-scoring this silent film, I want to talk now about Our Hospitality’s auteur, Buster Keaton. To me, Keaton was one of the signal American artists of the 20th Century. First, he made the most unsparingly bleak mainstream slapstick you could imagine, totally devoid of sentiment (while it’s apt that Keaton finally, toward the end of his life, collaborated with Beckett, it’s a pity that Keaton didn’t like Beckett’s work much: too close? too much theoreticizing that to Keaton seemed unnecessary?). Second, he was formally both acute and audacious, making use of the cinematic medium — and more particularly the silent cinematic medium — that has never been surpassed in its imagination, aptness, and precision. Our Hospitality is one of Keaton’s stone masterpieces.

There are "can a White man sing the blues?" issues with non-Gypsy performers of Gypsy music. But Romanian former child rock star Sanda Weigl's take on Balkan Gypsy music is good the way the early Stones were good: the rhythms, while losing all subtlety, become harder hitting — and the ironic self-awareness Q is through the ceiling. Meaning, it's not anything like as good as the The Real Thing, but it has its strong compensations.

Lincoln Center presents Kate NV not because she’s great — although God knows she is — but because she’s a “Woman Or Non-Binary Artist In Tech”. Meaning that they’re resplacing one artistically deadheaded orthodoxy with another. Don’t let that keep you away from Kate NV, though: her Avant-Pop is sublime.

232 52nd Street, Sunset Park, Brooklyn
$28.75-$83.59
TICKETS + INFORMATION
A sort of avant-Purimspiel (even if the run concludes a week before actual Purim) exploring the usual Purim themes of anti-Semitism and survival — although, this being Target Margin, it’s bound to be in a very indirectly suggestive and entertaining manner. (It’s a good thing David Herskovitz has emphasized that this work was formulated two years ago and does not purport to reflect, much less address, current events and concerns. Because Israel’s actions in Gaza problematicize the Biblical source here in a way that source fully deserves — but the piece doesn’t interrogate the source, rather just sticking it out there as if there’s nothing wrong. As it stands, it’s very hard at least for a Jew to walk out of this show feeling anything other than like complete shit.)

This List has already advised readers to grab every chance they can to hear the work of Julia Perry — and here’s a whole festival. Her work is now being resuscitated for all the right reasons, but you can’t really say (as I have in the past) that she’s been underplayed for the all the wrong reasons. Because putting Perry’s race and sex aside, how many composers of her American Neoclassical-into-Modernist generation are played much any more? Whatever the reason for Perry’s previous neglect, the music is marvelous, retaining a wonderful sprightliness throughout the composer’s stylistic evolution. Recommended with tremendous enthusiasm.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: From LPR, go to The Commerce Inn for stick-to-your-ribs Shaker-inspired cooking. From the Tishman Auditorium, Northern Chinese at Auntie Guan’s Kitchen 108.

When you have a personal fave composer as freakishly prolific as Martinů, it’s not surprising when works pop up that haven’t heard yet. But I’d never even suspected he had composed a Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe, String Quartet, and Piano — and here it is. And the rest of the program is so enticing: Nadine Sierra (no less) singing the lovely “Aria” from Villa-Lobos’s cello-laden Bachianas Brasilieiros No. 5; some more instrumental Villa-Lobos (some quite obscure) (here’s another very prolific composer!); some instrumental arrangements of Gesualdo’s weird Renaissance-into-Baroque vocal music (FUN FACT: while the composer Gesualdo was a murderer, his 20th Century successor as Prince of Venosa was a legendary winemaker whose famous quirks nevertheless stopped well short of homicide); and Stravinsky’s pungent Neoclassical Octet for Wind Instruments (‘nuff said).

Tasha and June McDoom are the good kind of singer-songwriters, both because they don’t decline to mock themselves and because they recognize the importance of musical texture in support of their words. William Alexander is just really good Alt R&B.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: You’re in a bar with a pretty good cocktail program. For something more solid (although don’t disregard the cocktails!), meticulously prepared Mexican at Hellbender Nighttime Cafe.

Strings in the Afternoon: Quintets of Mozart, Bunch & Montgomery

First Baptist Church
56 South Broadway, Tarrytown, Westchester

Well here’s something enticing. An afternoon of viola quintets. So of course there are two of Mozart’s, peaks among both Mozart’s own output and Western Classical chamber music as a whole. Jessie Montgomery’s deathless Strum (it gets played so often in its various configurations because it’s GREAT). And a quintet by Kenji Bunch. And if that’s not enough, the quintet’s violinists are Emerson Quartet founder Philip Setzer and the fantastic Miranda Cuckson; and one of the violists is Kenji Bunch himself!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Serious New American food (and cocktails!) at the Bar & Kitchen at Rivermarket Square.

I can’t remember the last time anyone programmed a complete runthrough of Bartók’s six string quartets in New York City. It’s a journey (you can really hear the composer’s style evolving), and one well worth taking. These are key documents of 20th Century Western music — and rough in a way you don’t think mainstream “classical” music can be: I always think No. 5 sounds like Keith Richards.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Longstanding neighborhood French at La Boite en Bois.

Jason Moran explores the music and legacy of James Reese Europe, who not only could be argued to have invented Big Band Jazz, but could also be argued, while on combat duty with the Harlem Hellfighters in World War I, to have started the French jazz mania — all before jazz was even formulated as a kind of music.
