Giusto Pio was best known in Italy for doing arrangements for a (Prog) pop singer; they even made it to Eurovision. But meanwhile he was a Minimalist composer, managing to skirt the banalities of misnamed “Neo-Classicism” while retaining some of its woozy dreaminess. Gryphon Rue could have been born to interpret this stuff.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, excellent cocktails, better food than you’d think, at Grand Army Bar. Streaming at home, have a White Negroni: pour 1 oz. each of Gin, Suze, and Lillet Blanc (I tend to prefer Cocchi Americano myself) into a rocks glass over ice. Stir. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Can I be honest with you? I love Bach unreservedly, but I’ve never cottoned to his Orchestral Suites, of which we’ll hear the third (with its famous “Air on a G String”) this afternoon: too stately. Carnegie Hall is pitching its Weimar Republic series as a study of a democracy on the precipice of Fascism. But to shallow aesthetes like Your Compiler, it’s a chance to hear pieces from one of our very favorite periods of European Art Music: the 1920s. So tonight Ensemble Connect gives us Berg’s Lyric Suite, Second Viennese School that’s almost popular; Weill’s String Quartet, a rewarding student piece that doesn’t sound much like the Weill we all love; Schulhoff’s Concertino for Flute, Viola, and Double Bass, Neo-Classicism tinged with Expressionist Late Romanticism; and Gershwin’s Lullaby. LOVE this stuff (even if we’re going to hell in a handbasket).

A couple of years ago, The Wooster Group asked Richard Foreman (the greatest theater artist I for one have ever experienced) if they could completely reimagine hisSymphony of Rats, a piece they had initially performed under Foreman’s direction in the 1980s, summarized by the auteur as, “a President of the United States is receiving messages by means other than the known senses, and he doesn't know whether to trust them or not”. Foreman told them, “You can do whatever you want! I hope it's completely unrecognizable.” You can see why they chose to redo it now.

Suzanne Bocanegra feat. Lili Taylor: Honor
MONDAY, APRIL 8, 2024
7:30 PM
Skirball Center, NYU
566 Laguardia Place, Greenwich Village, Manhattan
$45
TICKETS + INFORMATION
The “artist lectures” created by visual artist Suzanne Bocanegra should never work. They’re theatricalized talks, using props and other visual media, given by Bocanegra through the medium of an actor who repeats words fed to them through an earpiece by Bocanegra, sitting on the side of the stage. But what they end up doing is mediating the proceedings, so it’s not just a lecture but a meditation on theater and authenticity. To the extent the content matters, this one addresses Bocanegra’s obsession with a 16th Century tapestry in the Met’s collection called Honor. I think Lili Taylor has done more of these than any other actor. The perfectly chosen Geoff Sobelle directs.

One of the first shows that you could actually Go Out! to back in the days of The Lockdown (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)

What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

You can dismiss pianist/composer Ran Blake as one of the guys who tried to desiccate jazz in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s. But you’d be wrong: he has a steel mind and steely fingers; his musical conceptions aren’t overly complicated but rather genuinely complex — and can he create a mood. To celebrate the release of a biography, he performs sets of solos and duos.

An interesting factoid about Pachebel’s Canon is that many of things that are popular about this most popular and wedding-ready of Baroque bonbons weren’t actually written by Pachelbel, but rather inserted into the piece by the 20th Century French conductor Jean-François Paillard, whose 1968 version made the Canon famous. Until he gets to an improvisation on Pachelbel materials at the end, in this recital harpsichordist Jonathan Salamon will stick to what Pachelbel actually composed. Pachelbel’s keyboard works were what the composer was best known for during his lifetime, and this German Mid-Baroque stuff makes for great listening.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: From one garage to another: Antique Garage is so cute that you tend to forget how good the food is. And, it was Mediterranean before everybody and his brother were.

The Nederlands Dans Theater is the gold standard of slick expensive international modern dance — and I don’t even mean that as a putdown. Among the things featured on this program is something by William Forsythe, one of the most piercing minds in dance. And a recent piece by choreographer Sharon Ayal and visual designer Gai Behar, who met at a rave and their work looks like it.

Kelly Moran does what the British mistakenly call Neo-Classical: rather pleasant unchallenging Neo-Minimalist (in her case, often on a prepared piano) with strong overtones of Electronica. So why is hers so good and theirs so lame (and let’s not even begin to talk about the Italian)? Score one for our team! Peretsky’s is better, too: there may be something going on here. (Icelanders do this well, too.)

$7 or more for soundtrack
TICKETS + INFORMATION
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City.

Central Park, Manhattan

TICKETS + INFORMATION
What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Delicious pan-African at Teranga.
