Edward Einhorn: Performance for One

Untitled Theater Company #61
Skype
Free
http://www.untitledtheater.com/previous-productions/performance-for-one.html
The Skyped performances of this one-on-one theater piece, which has probably gotten more positive List subscriber feedback than anything I've ever recommended, are continuing indefinitely. When this 10-minute-each-of-two-parts piece, with one actor performing in an enclosed space for one audience member, involving close interaction between actor and audience member exploring memory and the performer-audience relationship, played live around the City last year, it threatened to be a bit precious and potentially more than a bit intrusive . But as a one-on-one Skype experience, it seems perfect — just what all we people ensconced alone in our apartments need right now. Most of the successive 10-minute slots are reserved in advance by email, but a few are left open for virtual walk-ins. Bravo to Edward Einhorn and Untitled Theater Company #61 for a truly timely and extremely well-thought-out enterprise.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: This early in the day, you'd want a Pimm's Cup: 2 oz. Pimm's No. 1 Cup (you have some, right?) and 3 oz. lemon soda, lemon/lime soda, or ginger ale (I have to say that my own preference is for lemon soda) in a tall glass over ice, garnished with two or more of a cucumber slice, a strawberry, a celery or rhubarb stalk, an orange or lemon wheel, or whatever you have on hand, really.

This is a pretty spectacular program. Pamela Z is one of the most charismatic and enjoyable performers in contemporary classical; I can't imagine not loving her enhanced vocal performances. Violinist/whatever C. Spenser Yeh makes noise and the occasional song. Alessandro Bosetti takes oral/vocal materials and fragments and fucks with them, to fascinating effect. Audrey Chen does advanced voice/cello/electronics; tonight she plays (very remotely) with free jazz trumpeter/vocalist Phil Minton.

It's becoming apparent that standard-issue theater acting doesn't work in the remote Zoom format. Actors have to scale down as they would for TV; it doesn't do to punch your performance out to the rafters. Remote readings where the actors didn't scale down have seemed overbroad and unwatchable. So the companies that have done best with remote readings have been those that take a scaled-down approach to start with. Which is why I'm worried about this show. To be sure, Molière is as funny — and as witty (not to mention socially perceptive) — as theater gets. And, in the theater, Raúl Esparza, the lead here, can't be beat. But will this production do Molière as if it's on a stage, or will it remember that everybody's in their living rooms? Fortunately, it won't cost anything to find out.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Molière calls for the original version of the French 75, which you hardly see anymore (the contemporary version is made with Gin instead of Cognac): pour 1 oz. each of Cognac and Simple Syrup and 3/4 oz. lemon juice into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a Champagne flute. Top with 3 oz. Champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist.

It's always pretty iffy to call someone The Voice Of Their Generation, but Toshiki Okada (b. 1973), with his real-into-surreal depictions of the lives of urban young adults, has given every appearance over the last couple of decades of being The Voice Of His Generation in Japan. This piece explores what happens when an artist becomes political: although it was written for Pig Iron a decade ago, it seems particularly timely now.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Esquire: pour 2-1/4 oz. Bourbon, 3/4 oz. Grand Marnier, and 1 teaspoon orange juice, with 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Molly Joyce finally gets to go ahead with the release party for her excellent new album. Joyce makes extremely compelling, compulsively listenable electroacoustic music, prominently featuring her favored instrument the toy organ, that manages to sooth and provoke in equal measure. Her new album, Breaking and Entering — having an implicit theme of the consequences, positive and negative, of physical disability — is a great listen. Tonight she belatedly celebrates its official release, with music from the record, performances, and chat.

One is (meaning I am) skeptical of art that seeks to be uplifting, much less comforting: that's only one very minor dimension of what art is supposed to do. Nevertheless, the fabulous guitar-percussion duo The Living Earth Show, working with composer Danny Clay and visual artist/filmmaker Jon Fischer, appeared to have nailed it: based on the excerpts they previewed on Tuesday night's Living Music: Pirate Radio Edition, this new music video piece is indeed comforting and uplifting — without being dumb, bland, or insulting. Can't wait to see the whole thing.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: It's time to rehabilitate the Tequila Sunrise: pour 1-1/2 oz. Reposado Tequila into an ice-filled Collins glass. Then pour in 3 oz. orange juice. Then drop in 1 teaspoon of Grenadine (watching it magically sink to the bottom and form an underlying layer, creating the "sunrise" effect). Ruin the effect (but combine and incorporate the flavors) by stirring. Garnish with an orange wheel. Pretend you're in the '70s. (The drink, it happily turns out, was invented before World War II.)

C. Spencer Yeh is a real favorite of this List. He makes noise music. Sometimes his noise music isn't that loud. He plays violin. He makes psych sound collages. He writes songs (not often). His curiosity seems endless. Here, he deals with all the material he has had bottled up since The Quarantine induced him to stop his SM sharing (he didn't stop taking pictures and accruing material; he just stopped posting it) (GOOD MOVE). I'm curious about the part that will be about food: I don't think I'll agree with it. I can't wait to find out.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The only problem with an El Malecón is that it'll cause you to open some bottles of Port and Sherry that you'll then have to finish off. Wait, maybe that isn't a problem. Pour 1-3/4 oz. white Rum, 1/2 oz. Ruby Port, 2 teaspoons of Oloroso Sherry, 1 oz. lime juice, and 2 teaspoons of superfine sugar (or, let's get real, 1/2 oz. of Simple Syrup), with 3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a Martini glass or coupe with (believe it or not) an ice cube.

Several nights a week, the Jazz Gallery is putting on early evening remote sessions where jazz musicians play and chat with the audience (limited to 15 people per show). I'm recommending them selectively, but check out the website for a full listing. Another guy who's straight ahead but fresh.

The final program of this almost staggeringly well-intentioned initiative (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible) from the fantastic violinist Jennifer Koh. The idea is this: there are active composers who have stable incomes from salaries or grants and other forms of institutional support; and there are active composers who freelance. Koh approached 21 composers have who stable incomes and asked them each to donate a 30-second micropiece for solo violin; in addition, she asked each of those composers to recommend a freelance composer, each of whom will be paid to compose a 30-second micropiece. Koh (who is donating her own considerable services) will premiere a few of the resulting works every Saturday at 7:00 PM on Instagram and Facebook live streams; if you don't feel comfortable exposing your personal data to the Evil Empire of Surveillance Capitalism, the shows will then reside on YouTube as videos. Just beyond great.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Belmont Stakes has had a series of "official cocktails" — but only one was formulated by Dale DeGroff: the Belmont Breeze. Pour 1-1/2 oz. MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: A surprising, enjoyable cocktail, a Chartreuse Smash: muddle 10 mint leaves with 1 oz. lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of sugar in a cocktail shaker. Add 2 oz. green Chartreuse. Fill with ice. Shake. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice (shaved if possible). Garnish with a mint sprig.

Here's a example of something that would have been too mainstream to List when we were allowed to Go Out!, but now that we're Staying In! seems worth pointing out to all of you. It might not seem much of an achievement to be the Funniest Russian Ever, but Nicolai Gogol wears that accolade well. This production of Gogol's most forthrightly funny work was universally praised as being almost painfully hilarious when it played live a couple of years ago. Tonight's live reading — featuring a dream cast of NYC mainstream theater actors — is well worth your time and attention.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Just about the only cocktail featuring Vodka I will ever recommend is a Vesper Martini: pour 2 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. Vodka, and 1-1/2 teaspoons of Kina l'Aéro d'Or (you can also use Cocchi Americano) into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.

The first online installment of this year's Bang on a Can Marathon last month was a spectacular success (artistically if not technically — but as everybody has commented, technical fuck-ups are as much a part of the BOAC Marathon tradition as running late is). So don't even think of missing this one. It's like everything this List stands for, in one 6-hour slice.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Let's use up more of those mint leaves in a parade of Southside Fizzes throughout the day: muddle 8-10 (by which I mean 10: we've got to use those suckers!) mint leaves in a cocktail shaker. Pour in 2 oz. Gin, 3/4 oz. lime juice, and 1-1/2 tablespoons of Simple Syrup. Fill with ice. Stir. Double-strain into a Highball glass over ice. Top with club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: It's strange that in Mexico a Paloma is considered a "working man's drink", since I always think of it as rather dainty. But great! Rub the rim of a tall glass with a grapefruit wedge, and then rim it with salt. Pour 2 oz. grapefruit juice and 1 tablespoon lime juice, with 1 teaspoon sugar, into the glass. Stir in 2 oz. She'll post a new "chapter" each Thursday at 3 PM (and leave them up), toward the eventual end of their all forming a big piece — which the participants can get together to perform live on The Other Side!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: I don't know if it will be the cause of it all, but this Mint Julep will be the cause of your depleting your mint overload: muddle 15 mint leaves with 1-1-2 teaspoons of Simple Syrup in a julep cup (or an Old Fashioned glass if you must — but really). Here's the remarkable thing: I saw a live performance of Saul Williams and Ted Hearne's lively, affecting, disquieting, eclectic but solidly R&B-inflected music-theater piece treating gentrification and displacement back in the days when they still had live performances. I've also seen a snippet of this remote video production, performed by the singers and musicians from their homes. And — I can't believe it — the remote video production is better, just as disquieting but even more affecting, than the live show was. Will wonders never cease.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The big decision when making an Old Fashioned is whether you use Rye or Bourbon. I tend to prefer Rye's sharp spiciness over Bourbon's mellow sweetness as a matter of principle — but goddamn it, sometimes you're just in the mood for a sweeter, mellower libation. Really you can't go wrong either way. Place a sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass (duh) and wet it with a dash or two of Angostura bitters and maybe a very tiny bit of club soda. Muddle (and kind of spread the sugar around). Add ice. Pour in 2 oz. Rye or Bourbon. Garnish with an orange twist.

Sandbox is yet another marvelous small percussion ensemble doing exactly the kind of music this List supports: smart, inquisitive, and fun.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: On the one hand, it seems disrespectful to suggest a drink during these serious times. On the other hand, you may feel you can use one more than ever. Harry Craddock "invented" (it's actually virtually identical to existing cocktails) the Strike's Off to commemorate the end of the 1926 general strike in Great Britain in support of the rights of coal miners: pour 1-1/2 oz. Gin and 3/4 oz. each Swedish Punsch and lemon juice (you can also use lime juice) into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Not to detract from Sandbox Percussion, but you might want to play The Byrds doing "The Bells of Rhymney", based on a poem about the continuing mistreatment of miners after the strike, while drinking it.

An almost staggeringly well-intentioned initiative (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible) from the fantastic violinist Jennifer Koh.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: It's been a while since we treated ourselves to an Adonis: pour 1-1/2 oz. each of Fino (or Manzanilla) Sherry and sweet Vermouth, with 2 dashes of orange bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe — or even a wine glass. Squeeze an orange peel into the drink, and then discard (the orange peel, not the drink).

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Bobby Burns is kind of Autumnal, if not downright Wintry. But if you're getting a little tired of all this Spring-into-Summer shit, it's also kind of delicious: pour 2 oz. blended Scotch, 3/4 Oz. sweet Vermouth, and 1/2 Bénédictine into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Seven playwrights were assembled to each to write a short 10-minute play. Each had to come up with a rule to be followed in writing the plays; and all had to abide by all seven rules the seven playwrights had come up with. The plays are now performed. People have loved the past iterations of this (it's now being done every two weeks). Of course, some people also haven't — but the whole premise assumes a mixed bag.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Tank promises "unlimited booze" ("provided by yourselves"). Let's take them up on that with some Palmettos: pour 1-1/2 oz. each of dark Rum and sweet Vermouth, with 1 dash of orange bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. She'll post a new "chapter" each Thursday at 3 PM (and leave them up), toward the eventual end of their all forming a big piece — which the participants can get together to perform live on The Other Side!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: There are a few different drinks going under the name Petite Fleur.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: When someone like Desmond Child comes on, the best thing to do is hit yourself on the head with a wooden board and hope you don't wake up till he's over. In general, though, you could do worse than spending the late afternoon and early evening sipping Tom Collinses: pour 2 oz. Old Tom Gin (you can use plain old London Dry if you're unfortunate enough not to have any Old Tom around) (a circumstance I hope you'll remedy), 3/4 oz. lemon juice, and 1 oz. Simple Syrup into a cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into an ice-filled Highball or Collins glass. Top with soda water. Garnish with a lemon wedge and a cocktail cherry. (I'll acknowledge that the traditional method of preparation is to build this drink in the glass — but I will go to my death insisting that you get a better blend of the ingredients when you shake them.)
