$7 or more for soundtrack
TICKETS + INFORMATION
One of the first shows during Quarantine that you could actually Go Out! to back in the days of The Lockdown (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City (if you go over the weekend, you can get the fabulous pastrami).

Ellen Reid: SOUNDWALK
MONDAY – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31 – NOVEMBER 6, 2022 (ongoing)

New York Philharmonic
Central Park, Manhattan
Free (registration required)
TICKETS + INFORMATION
The New York Phil hops aboard the walk-around-the-landscaped-space-with-soundtrack train. The highly allusive soundtrack was put together by Ellen Reid, who is one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Delicious pan-African at Teranga.

A new setting by non-female Iranian composer Reza Vali of Rumi, Hafez, and Sapehri (those poets’ work — especially that of the two Classics among the three — of course being super-great stuff). The rest of the show is the kind of thing Jordi Savall has been doing so brilliantly: an exploration of the musics being made in the so-called Near East and Maghreb during the period of our Western “Early Music”.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: St. Tropez is one attractive wine bar.

A second chance this weekend to see a live-music-accompanied showing of F.W. Murnau’s monumentally creepy 1922 silent vampire movie/masterpiece of German Expressionist film, Nosferatu. New Yorkers of a certain age will remember with great fondness the time when Peter Gordon’s idea that you could make Art Dance Music was startlingly new, and Kit Fitzgerald’s video POPPED. During the Russian Revolution, Chekhov’s sister put many of his manuscripts into a safe deposit box for safekeeping. Among them was Chekhov’s unperformed first play. The box containing the manuscript — missing its title page — was later discovered by Soviet scholars. This prolix work (much too long to perform as written) has come to be known as Platonov (or, more piquantly, the Play Without a Title) (you might have seen versions of it in New York called Wild Honey and The Present). Dead Centre, however, does not present a version of it. They present a fantasia on it, a play impossible to perform.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Ardesia Wine Bar, still one of the City’s most pleasant.

The Object Collection company, which has never met a text it couldn’t unpack into something truly bizarre (but always telling), takes one of Robert Ashley’s unstaged works and stages it. Automatic Writing — a great great piece — made music, and indeed derived characters, from a tape of the composer free-associating. The stage options are obvious — but you can be sure those aren’t the ones Object Collection will employ. The List Event of the week? The month? The season?
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Can you get into Neo-Cantonese-American sensation Bonnie’s yet? Nah. But at least they’re very very nice when they turn you away.

Bedlam Theater’s direct stripped-down approach to presenting classic theater is very effective. This season they’re doing two in repertory — although one is better as a piece of theater than the other (owing of course to the inferioriity of realist/naturalist psychological narrative as an aesthetic pursuit).

Composer Douglas J. Cuomo’s work is eclectic in the goodsense — and nice to listen to (with the advantages and disadvantages that adjective evokes). This piece for an inventive guitarist and string quartet should be extra nice.

881 Seventh Avenue, Midtown, Manhattan
$18-$39
TICKETS + INFORMATION
This List thinks it’s criminal that we so rarely get to hear live performances of the music of Claude Vivier, one of the great composers of the late 20th Century. This is a form of Spectralism that is almost Mahlerian in its scope and emotional impact: something no one else has done. And the Juilliard Symphony is conducted by David Robertson, one of the best out there! Stravinsky’s glittering orchestral showpiece, The Firebird, should give these student musicians a chance to strut their stuff.

A typically engaging program by the young musicians of Ensemble Connect. A string quartet by Eleanor Alberga, whose Jamaican upbringing tells. A Martinu chamber piece for the intriguing combination of clarinet, horn, cello, and drum that I don’t think I’ve heard before (I mean, the only person who ever heard everything that almost ridiculously prolific composer wrote was Martinu himself). Bach’s Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, which I don’t have to tell you is the one with long harpsichord cadenza. And something by Clara Schumann: if we have to listen to Late Romantic, thank you for making it something we haven’t heard a million times already.

Back in the ‘50s, Georges Brassen started to take the French chanson tradition and rough it up. In what must count as some kind of minor miracle, Pierre de Gaillande has done what no one has ever really done before: taken French chanson and successfully translated those mordant, biting lyrics into English (think of all the lame, reductiveBrel translations you’ve endured). Should be a great night — in a low key sort of way.

Enough with the “Home” stuff already. In any event, if the Phil hooking up with Roomful of Teeth to do a world premiere by The Future Of Classical Music, Teeth bandmember Caroline Shaw, isn’t a major event, I don’t know what is. Also on the bill: Debussy’s Prelude to “The Afternoon of the Faun, one of the most sensuous things in all of music — led hear by one of the least sensuous conductors. And Florence Price’s chef-d’ouevre Fourth Symphony — which shows that your music can be boring and retrograde even if you’re a neglected Early 20th Century Black female composer. (To be clear, I’m not arguing that Price shouldn’t be played. To the contrary, much of what contemporary orchestras play is boring and retrograde, and there’s no reason to exclude this boring and retrograde music on grounds of the composer’s race and sex. But I don’t have to recommend it.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Kwame Onwuachi’s Afro-Caribbean restaurant in the Hall isn’t open yet. But there’s BIGGER news: cocktails at the Hall’s bars will be handled by List bud and Cocktail Genius Don Lee!!!!!!!! I may never remember the second half of a Philharmonic concert again.

There is all this really great Late Renaissance (and Baroque — but that’s another concert) choral music, written by Peninsular (meaning having come to the Americas from actual Spain) and Colonial/Creole composers, hiding in plain sight in Cathedral libraries in Latin America. Maybe because the composers had to be seriously concerned with audience appeal, their music got a few steps livelier. You will love this stuff.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2022
7:00 PM
The Greene Space In Person & Live Stream
44 Charlton Street, Soho, Manhattan
$20 in person; free live stream
TICKETS + INFORMATION
When you describe Ingram Marshall’s music, you can make it sound like a lot of things — ambient, soundscape, Minimalist, post-Minimalist — but when you hear it, it’s utterly distinctive: calm, uninsistent; but compelling, not fading into the background. Marshall is prototypically West Coast — and although I, for one, wouldn’t want to live there, I love visiting, both physically and aurally. Various NYC Musicians About Town pay tribute — including Timo Andres, who has a lot of Marshall in him even though he’s East Coast through and through.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, is there a more delightful NYC spot that the vaguely Italian(ish) King? Streaming at home, have a Gibson: pour 2 oz. Gin and 1 oz. dry Vermouth into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with as many cocktail onions as you feel like.

I don’t actually know anything about Lauren Sarah Hayes. But she’s billed as an “Extreme Vocalist from Brazil”, a phrase that has three of my favorite words in it (“from” I can take or leave). (ETA: Oh wait, I just listened to some of her stuff. She’s GREAT! Glitch, noise, snatches of melody [but only snatches]. Also, describing her as a “vocalist” leaves out all the electronics with a chance of piano. Go to this!) (PS: She’s actually Scottish.)

Twyla Tharp has long since revealed herself as the Show Biz Wing of the Postmodern Dance Movement, and I for one have a hard time continuing to take her seriously. But these two pieces, from the 1980s, are great: what Tharp is good for. In the Upper Room, set to Philip Glass, is excitement on a stick. Nine Sinatra Songs is not only great fun, but it’s culturally significant: it encapsulates the moment when the Rock Generation was beginning to come to terms with the fact that the mocked, derided Frank Sinatra was in fact a supreme popular artist. The beginning of the end of Rockism!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Frenchette goes Uptown and simplifies out what made it great, but leaves in what makes it good, at (speaking of Rockism) Le Rock.

Anna Clyne is one of those composers who would be genuinely popular if we had a living mainstream Classical Music culture. There is nothing about her wonderful work that couldn’t appeal to a large mainstream audience — if they weren’t too lazy and timid to think for themselves about music, rather than bathing in works that have already been endorsed for them as “great”. She has two fairly new chamber pieces on this program. Fittingly, the other piece is what has to be Beethoven’s single most entertaining score, one that makes you forget all about the legendary grumpy growler — and a huge hit upon its release, although it doesn’t loom large today when we only listen to “masterpieces” — the Septet.

Bedlam Theater’s direct stripped-down approach to presenting classic theater is very effective. This season they’re doing two in repertory — although one is better as a piece of theater than the other (owing of course to the inferiority of realist/naturalist psychological narrative as an aesthetic pursuit).

Gabriela Ortiz is the very model of a Contemporary Mexican Composer, and she’ll have new pieces played each night. Tuesday’s concert pairs her new violin concerto (played by María Dueñas) with Mahler’s First Symphony, the kind of piece conductor Gustavo Dudamel has trouble holding together. Wednesday’s concert puts a shorter new piece by Ortiz with a new Violin Concerto (played by the excellent Anne Akiko Meyers) by the older Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, one of those conservative composers whose work is redeemed by the exuberent appeal of the folkloric elements he draws on: the kind of stuff that’s Dudamel’s meat and drink. That concert concludes with Copland’s Third Symphony: also the kind of piece Dudamel has trouble holding together.

Elevator Repair Service does their usual meta-text-recreation thing with a debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley in the ‘60s. I remember, when I was in Law School, pulling God and Man at Yaleoff the library shelf to peruse during a study break; I had never read it. I couldn’t believe how repellant it was. Liberals like to present the current version of the Amercian Conservative movement as some kind of aberrational departure from something that used to be reasonable. Don’t be fooled. Those people have been engaged in a bigoted attempt to destroy American democracy for as long as they’ve been a movement.

There aren’t that many classical saxophone players, so to say that Steven Banks is one of the best ones out there understates his considerable — you might even say astonishing — ability. He’s also developing as a composer. Tonight’s show features a new long-form composition. But it also features guided meditation. But then again it still also featuresAndrew Yee on cello.

Imagine if David Geffen Hall weren’t a terrible facility with a cold ugly ambience, bad sound, and insufficient amenities. Maybe with this fourth (OK, third-and-a-half) renovation we won’t have to imagine. For List purposes, the big deal is a new sound-and-light composition by Marcus Balter, designed to show off the Hall. We can also look forward to some John Adams, and Tania León’s fabulous Stride. Respighi is barely even music — but it’ll also show off the Hall. If there’s anything to show off.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: It looks like Kwame Onwuachi’s Afro-Caribbean restaurant in the Hall isn’t open yet. But there’s BIGGER news: cocktails at the Hall’s bars will be handled by List bud and Cocktail Genius Don Lee!!!!!!!! I may never remember the second half of a Philharmonic concert again.

When Ping Chong broke through with Lazarus(about the New Testament resurrected character reappearing in the then-contemporary New York) 50 years ago, nobody was doing the kind of imagistic multi-media theater that he was (at least not nearly as seamlessly and well). Now, the rest of experimental theater has caught up with him, so that while he’s still extraordinary, he’s no longer unique: the fate of an originator. It’ll be more than interesting to see Chong revisit his breakout piece half a century on, bringing it into the present. A must.

Violinist Jennifer Koh and vocalist Devóne Tines — two splendid musicians, among the very best now active — have together assembled a multimedia program exploring their experiences as people of color in the classical music industry. 10 Lincoln Center Plaza, Upper West Side, Manhattan
$110-$367
TICKETS + INFORMATION

Bedlam Theater’s direct stripped-down approach to presenting classic theater is very effective. The expert NOVUS NY new music ensemble explores the wonderful ouvre of George Crumb, an unclassifiable composer who was always concerned with his music’s sounding — although usually not like anything you’d heard before. Not many composers can pull of the feat of being completely cutting-edge while being just good to listen to. In this show, Crumb’s music is paired with a peice by his student Jennifer Higdon.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, try not to get too upset at the relative absense of Lyonnaise dishes at Daniel Boulud’s supposed Bouchon Le Gratin, and just enjoy how good the few there are, are. Streaming at home, welcome Fall with a Jack Rose: pour 2-1/2 oz. Laird’s Bonded apple brandy, 3/4 oz. lemon juice, and 1/2 oz. Grenadine into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, nice enough bistro at Bacchus. Streaming at home (poor thing), have a Dutch Oven: put 2 sugar cubes at the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add 3 drops of Absinthe, 2 dahes of Peychaud’s bitters, 1 dash of orange bitters, and a capful of soda water. Muddle. Pour in 2 oz. Genever. Add ice. Stir. Strain into a tumbler over ice.

Philip Glass’s études for solo piano — written to improve the composer’s own fluency at the keyboard — have developed legs as concert pieces. Not surprisingly, given their melodic and rhythmic attractions. Vicky Chow is just the pianist to play them — and here she’ll run through the pieces on her new recording of Book 1 (of two).

Gin and 1 oz. dry Vermouth into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a (very) chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist or an olive.

A must.

Bedlam Theater’s direct stripped-down approach to presenting classic theater is very effective. This season they’re doing two in repertory — although one is better as a piece of theater than the other (owing of course to the inferioriity of realist/naturalist psychological narrative as an aesthetic pursuit).

I haven’t seen it said anywhere, but the British group caroline’s spaced-out Fok-Post-Rock sounds like nothing so much like the folkier tracks on Pink Floyd’s Meddle— but wild and human instead of antiseptic. Claire Rousay’s Emo-Electronica is just wonderful.

Public Theater
425 Lafayette Street, NoHo, Manhattan
$60-$160
TICKETS + INFORMATION
