Skirball Center, NYU
566 Laguardia Place, Greenwich Village, Manhattan

TICKETS + INFORMATION
The “artist lectures” created by visual artist Suzanne Bocanegra should never work. They’re theatricalized talks, using props and other visual media, given by Bocanegra through the medium of an actor who repeats words fed to them through an earpiece by Bocanegra, sitting on the side of the stage. What’s weird is that they turn out to be fascinating, compelling: a seemingly bad idea gone right. This one is about how Bocanegra’s grandparents lived across the street from the legendary Chicken Ranch in rural Texas. Lili Taylor is the only actor who’s done more than one of these.

$7 or more for soundtrack
TICKETS + INFORMATION
One of the first shows that you could actually Go Out! to back in the days of The Lockdown (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City (if you go over the weekend, you can get the fabulous pastrami).

Central Park, Manhattan

TICKETS + INFORMATION
What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

Ben Lamar Gay plays some of the most skewed, even warped, Americana you’ve ever heard: he makes Van Dyke Parks sound totally straight. You kind of wonder if anyone at Nonesuch actually listened to his album before they agreed to co-release it with International Anthem: it certainly goes way beyond that label’s usual comfort level. As for Tomin’em, I don’t actually know much about him. But I sure know some of his bandmembers, like Luke Stewart and Lester St. Louis and Tcheser Holmes.

What’s better than the fabulous all-treble Quince Ensemble? The fabulous Quince Ensemble with the fabulous composer/vocalists Paul Pinto and Annika K. Sokolofsky. Each of their pieces tonight appears to make sensitive (if antic) borrowings of pop/vernacular elements (oh fucking yeah!). The inimitable Pinto will also do a solo set (oh fucking yeah!).

Undoubtedly The List Event Of The Week. The beyond-category Anthony Braxton — a giant of contemporary American music — plays with noise duo Wolf Eyes(!). Hieroglyphic Being, one of those endlessly prolific Chicago electronic musicians, rooted in House but tending experimental, who somehow, for all they release, are always on point. Mesa Ritual, combining William Fowler Collins’s electronic Western noise with Raven Chacon’s Pulitzer-winning music-as-sound, making music that is almost Brucknerian in its punctuation of long stretches of quiet nature sound with bursts of overwhelming noise. And MV Carbon, taking the cello (along with other things) places you never thought it would go.

Superstar French harpsichordist Christophe Rousset leads a vocal/chamber recital centering on a newly-discovered cantata(!) by the great François Couperin. French Baroque music is exquisite to the point where it almost feels like you’re being tickled to death; nothing is approached directly, everything is abstracted, everything has a level of prettiness raised so high you can hardly comprehend how pretty it is. This music is pure pleasure.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Daniel is on the next block. It’s expensive and no longer great (and no longer of any relevance whatsoever to NYC dining culture). You can eat at the bar.

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the First Folio, Collectio Musicorum performs settings of songs from Shakespeare’s plays. (Have I ever told you that “Full Fathom Five” is one of my very favorite song lyrics?) (TBH, the best setting I’ve ever heard of “Sigh No More, Ladies” was as a bossa nova — not likely to be performed this afternoon.)

The big news is that, on this tour, the founder of this chamber orchestra and magnificent choir, John Eliot Gardiner, is being replaced by someone who doesn’t hit musicians. You have definitely heard Son Jarocho from Veracruz, a vivacious coastal music that combines elements of the Spanish Baroque, Mexican Indigenous, and — to me this is surprising, as Veracruz is on the Gulf coast rather than the Atlantic, but what do I know — West African music brought in by kidnapped slaves. It’s that lively harp-driven Mexican music: you totally know it (if nothing else, certainly you’ve heard “La Bomba”). And if it doesn’t make you smile (you can’t dance in the formal rooms of the Americas Society), I don’t know what’s up.

I was staying once in the Medina of Marakkesh, hanging out on the rooftop of my hotel. Some Gnawi were visiting another guest, and they played their sintars late into the night, inviting me to join their party. I didn’t know anything about Northwestern African desert music back then; and I was entranced by that percussive droning music that sounded Blusey (and that, as it turned out, was also developed in slavery). I ended up staying up all night. Now you can be entranced, too.

Vibraphonist Selendis Sebastian Alexander Johnson is, quite simply, This List’s new hero. OrchiddBB do glitchy electronics. Just great.

What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

Amidst an installation by Jacolby Satterwhite (who’s pretty great himself) multidisciplinary musical performances will occur. Friday is Hairbone, which you could call Art Cabaret except you’d be wrong (and also they’re a lot louder than that would suggest). Saturday, you could call the duo of Patrick Belaga and Jazmin Romero Central European Freak Folk (with visual elements) except you’d also be wrong (and that’s only like a tenth of what they do anyway). You can call Ahya Simone a multimedia bard of Black Detroit, and there you’d be right. What I want to know is, how come the Met Museum can honor diversity while still programing high-quality performances that are true to its mission while Lincoln Center — which unlike the Met Museum is an actual performing arts center — has apparently decided that the way to address such concerns is to pretend it’s a BID street fair?

Dana Reitz starts with simple materials — cells, you might call them — and expands them into engrossing, increasingly complex structures. She makes astonishing use of light (she only works with the best light designers). This piece is a solo. You can’t take your eyes off her.

John Zorn at 70: New Masada / Simulacrum
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2023

2960 Broadway, Morningside Heights, Manhattan
$23.25-$33.50; students & Under 25 $18.25-$25.50; seniors $20.25-$28.50
TICKETS + INFORMATION
Avant-workoholic John Zorn continues his Birthday onslaught, this time on the jazz side. The rather wonderful New Masada Quartet melds Klezmer/Ashkenazic heads with Post-Hard Bop playingness. Simulacrum answers the musical question, what would the Tony Williams Lifetime have been like if it were masterminded by John Zorn?
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: A fast-casual Global Rice chain might not sound like the most enticing idea. But J.J. Johnson is some kind of culinary genius, and the new branch of Fieldtrip brightens this neighborhood.

Gillian Walsh makes dances of great — and greatly magnetic — stillness and concentration, where things happen so sparcely that every little thing assumes huge significance. This one seems kind of um Christian.

Lucinda Childs’s 1979 piece Dance (to music by Philip Glass) changed the course of Downtown dance history. Starting in the early ‘60s, the Post-Modern Judson School had emphasized the modest and the quotidian, the unenfranchised bohemian. Dance was the first of the Big Post-Modern Dance Productions, the kind of thing that filled the stage at BAM throughout the ‘80s. Up until this stunner, nobody thought Post-Modern dance could be this Big. Visual design was important to these productions, and there was always a Major Visual Artist involved: here, the dance is in counterpoint to projections designed by Sol LeWitt. The projections were filmed at rehearsals of the piece; so the dancers seem to be dancing with themselves. This presents an interesting question for revivals: do you use LeWitt’s original footage from 1979, or do you recreate the projections with the current dancers. (The last revival of this piece I saw used the original footage — and it was hard not to focus on how much sleeker, and more expensively shod, the current dancers are than their comparatively dumpy 1970s NYC counterparts.) Eventually, the Big Post-Modern Dance Production genre suffered the same fate as Marvel Movies: audiences stopped being thrilled with all the Bigness but became fatigued by it. And of course, if you’re me, you can’t help but tie the turn by formerly counter-cultural Downtown figures to these slick expensive productions, which required corporate sponsorship (this show is part of a series sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels), to the concurrent ascendance of Neo-Liberalism. And get real pissed off.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: You gotta say two things about Quality Bistro: it’ll still be open after the show, and it’s right across the street.

This is Listed for two Ligeti pieces. Rhythmically incisive, sonically expansive, Ligeti’s is some of the very best (I’m tempted to omit the “some of”) Western classical music of the second half of the 20th Century. There’s also a new piano concerto by Elena Firsova in the Post-Romantic lyrical Modernist idiom that I, for one, just don’t like; nevertheless, it’s just the kind of thing that soloist Yefim Bronfman plays splendily (as it should be: it was written for him). Let’ not leave out Brahms’s Romantic-that-thinks-it’s-Classical Serenade No. 1, which I, for one, like just fine. Or conductor David Robertson: ditto.

$30; $25 students/seniors; $10 first 10 tickets to each performance
TICKETS + INFORMATION
Palissimo choreographer Pavel Zuštiak thinks his works are narrative, but you won’t think so. They’re more like dreams; indeed you could legitimately call them surreal (a word that is misused even more than “ironic”). The Palissimo Company is also very heavy on stagecraft and design, applied holistically (in that it’s a good follow-up to last weeks Dmitry Krimov). “Hebel” is a recurring phrase in Ecclesiastes: it’s the “vanity” in “all is vanity” — and that’s what we’ll see here. This show will be rather special.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Yeah I’m suspicious of vegan Mexican, too. But Bar Verde is definitely OK.

How great is to be let loose to wander the Cemetery (with candles guiding you along the appropriate paths) for three and a half hours, coming upon musical performances, films projected on trees and structures, storytellers, and circus performers? With a (purchased) beer or wine in your hand? (It would be better with a cocktail — but I guess one of the messages of cemeteries is that you never get everything you want.) Films by Rooftop Films, storytelling by The Moth, circus by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, who knows what by the Morbid Academy.

It isn’t hard to believe it’s 40 years since I saw Laurie Anderson do her entire magnum opus United States over two nights in this very hall; in fact, it’s all too easy. So it’s fitting for Anderson to come back to do a career retrospective (named after one of the songs from that extended piece). Sexmob should really do a number on “Example #22” (which they’d better include in the program), which I believe I got up and danced to in 1984 (or at least danced to as it played in my head as I walked home).

The Jasper String Quartet showcases the music of Vivian Fung. I remember the first I ever heard of Fung was when she was still a student (of David Diamond), and Anthony Tommasini praised one of her student works in The Times for staying true to the traditions of Stravinsky and Bartók but making something fresh of them. Fung has certainly developed since then: she now sounds like noone but herself. Her music is so textural it almost feels like you’re feeling it rather than hearing it. The Jaspers also find time for some Schnittke and, yes, some Bartók.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The restaurants in this part of the Upper East Side make want to puke even more than those in Upper East Midtown.

THEY say: “A rotating cast of avant noisemakers play along with a mic’d up elevated highway”. Green-Wood Cemetery, Sunset Park Entrance
35th Street at 4th Avenue, Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn

6:00 AM – 1:00 AM
New York Philharmonic
Central Park, Manhattan
Free

The DeCapo Chamber Players play a rather stodgy Old Skool Modernist program of three generations (young/old/dead) of American composers. Even the youngster still writes like there’s an Uptown/Downtown split (and he’s on the Northside). And the dead one’s the most youthful-sounding. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

TICKETS + INFORMATION
Peretsky goes all mellow electroacoustic on his new piano w/vocals album, but it isn’t just noodling. My only complaint is that it sounds more like a Summer record than a Fall one. KING VISION ULTRA, coming from Hip-Hop and Metal and making music that sounds like nothing but himself, is one of the crucial musicians in New York. Yatta you will just love: Sierra Leone-rooted jazz-inflected Nu R&B sung with a gorgeous alto voice.

The Harvest Time Project: A Tribute to Pharoah Sanders
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2023
8:00 PM
National Sawdust
80 North 6th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
$38.45
TICKETS + INFORMATION
Pharoah Sanders’s 1976 “Harvest Time” (for sax, harmonium, guitar, bass, and percussion) is just some of the best Western music there is. People at the time complained that the theretofore volcanic Sanders was drifting into New Age — but now it sounds like he was getting an early start on his trip to heaven. This music is meditative, but while you’d never call it tense, it certainly isn’t lax. Chicago Scenester Joshua Abrams has been leading different ensembles of different compositions to explore the work; tonight’s includes among others Jeff Parker, the Neo-Pop-to-New-Music guitarist who is one of this List’s Chicago favorites.

Cal Massey is one of the great lost composer/arrangers in jazz. He came out of the same Philadelphia scene as Coltrane (although he spent his last years in Brooklyn). They celebrate with a piece that was supposed to be shown to a wide audience (I mean, not that ISSUE Project Room’s then-current auditorium was so big) in March 2020 — but we all know what happened then. Instead, ISSUE staged the work later in 2020 as an installation for a limited audience, and also turned it into a video that they streamed. Now we’re back to the original presentation, at last, with Laurie Spiegel’s algorithmically generated electronic sounds as spacialized by Seth Cluett and accompanied by his visuals.

On Friday, the smart pianist Aaron Parks, who’s always found a way to credibly integrate his Indie Rock tastes into plausible jazz, leads a knockout sextet. On Saturday, Parks and a bunch of surprise friends celebrate his 40th birthday (presumably the showtimes have been pushed up early to give Parks a chance to really celebrate afterward).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, José Andés cocktails and bar snacks at the sky-high Nubeluz. Streaming at home, let’s think about the thing Aaron Parks doesn’t want to upon entering middle age, by paying tribute to Parks’s fellow Seattlean, the recently deceased mixology legend Murray Stenson, with the forgotten cocktail Stenson memorably put back on the map, the Last Word: pour 3/4 oz. each of Gin, green Chartreuse, Maraschino liqueur, and lime juice into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.

What seems to be an art gallery exhibition turns out to be a “highly interactive” experience in which was is on display are not artworks but ideas (whatever that means).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Seems silly not to cross the street to the Rockaway Brewing Company Long Island City Tap Room. If you want something more solid, take a walk and celebrate that the wonderful Serbian-on-the-Water funspot Anable Basin Sailing Bar & Grill avoided corporate/civic displacement.
