The imaginative and empathetic composer Lisa Bielawa — certainly one of those who have their own sound world that you can recognize immediately — has a coronavirus project in which she's soliciting short testimonies from the public reflecting on coronavirus experiences, writing melodies for them, giving them to singers to record, and then composing backing tracks for them. She'll post a new "chapter" each Thursday at 3 PM (and leave them up), toward the eventual end of their all forming a big piece — which the participants can get together to perform live on The Other Side!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Whatever time of day it is, it's always time for a Lily's Cartel: pour 1 oz. Pisco, 3/4 oz. Aperol, 3/4 oz. orange juice (blood orange juice by preference — if you've got blood oranges), 1/4 oz. lemon juice, and 1/2 oz. simple syrup into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake, and strain into a Champagne flute. Top with Champagne. You'll never look at an Aperol Spritz the same way again.

The Skyped performances of this one-on-one theater piece, which has probably gotten more positive List subscriber feedback than anything I've ever recommended, are continuing indefinitely. When this 10-minute-each-of-two-parts piece, with one actor performing in an enclosed space for one audience member, involving close interaction between actor and audience member exploring memory and the performer-audience relationship, played live around the City last year, it threatened to be a bit precious and potentially more than a bit intrusive . But as a one-on-one Skype experience, it seems perfect — just what all we people ensconced alone in our apartments need right now. Most of the successive 10-minute slots are reserved in advance by email, but a few are left open for virtual walk-ins. Bravo to Edward Einhorn and Untitled Theater Company #61 for a truly timely and extremely well-thought-out enterprise.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: This early in the day, you'd want a Pimm's Cup: 2 oz. Pimm's No. 1 Cup (you have some, right?) and 3 oz. lemon soda, lemon/lime soda, or ginger ale (I have to say that I prefer lemon soda) in a tall glass over ice, garnished with two or more of a cucumber slice, a strawberry, a celery or rhubarb stalk, an orange or lemon wheel, or whatever you have on hand, really.

QUALIATIK's very vaguely poppy electronic music is so good, and their videos are so striking in their borderline psychotic way, that you can't help but be very excited about this remote show.

Playwright Richard Nelson is a little conventional for this List, but in the midst of The Quarantine an online world premiere performance of a major new play seems worth at least noting. This is the latest installment in Nelson's long-running Rhinebeck Panorama, and if you're interested in watching bougie Caucasian-Americans revealing themselves in response to political events, this is the place. To prepare, you can watch the preceding plays in this cycle on Channel Thirteen's Theater Close-Up website (where they'll be running till May 5).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: We should be drinking Martinis during this, right? Pour 2 oz. Gin and 1 oz. dry Vermouth into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, stir, and strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist or, if you must, an olive.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Let's celebrate with an old cocktail revived on the opening menu of the Pegu Club 15 years ago: the Jimmie Roosevelt. Soak a brown sugar cube in Angostura bitters, and place in the bottom of a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Add ice. Pour in 1 oz. of chilled Cognac, then 2 oz. of Champagne, then a float of 1/4 oz. Green Chartreuse. Not only is this cocktail complex and delicious, but it's pretty as hell.

Ace violinist Jennifer Koh plays Bach with the same fierce clarity and innate understanding she brings to alt classical and New Music. And I said last week, Bach is one of the composers that I, for one, find myself returning to again and again in The Quarantine (the others being Pauline Oliveros and John Luther Adams). The combination of inexhaustibility of detail, absolute logical rightness, and surface impersonality underlain by a profound undertow of awe and dread: they all seem so right, so needed, right now. Those, and the incontestable evidence Bach's works provide that humans are capable of achievements beyond our wildest imaginings.
MAKE NIGHT OF IT: Spring Forward: pour 2 oz. Gin and 1 oz. dry Vermouth into a frozen mixing glass and throw in a trimmed ramp or Spring onion (RAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMPPPPPPSSSS!). Muddle — but just a little (you don't want the allium to get too bitter). Now, fill the shaker with ice and stir. Pour into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with another trimmed ramp or Spring onion (RAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMPPPPPSSSS!).

An almost staggeringly well-intentioned initiative (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible) from the fantastic violinist Jennifer Koh. The idea is this: there are active composers who have stable incomes from salaries or grants and other forms of institutional support; and there are active composers who freelance. Koh approached 21 composers have who stable incomes and asked them each to donate a 30-second micropiece for solo violin; in addition, she asked each of those composers to recommend a freelance composer, each of whom will be paid to compose a 30-second micropiece. Koh (who is donating her own considerable services) will premiere a few of the resulting works every Saturday at 7:00 PM on Instagram and Facebook live streams; if you don't feel comfortable exposing your personal data to the Evil Empire of Surveillance Capitalism, the shows will then reside on YouTube as videos. Just beyond great.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Someday we'll be able to go to Newark again (unless you're stuck there now), but for now we can drink the cocktail: pour 2 oz. It's no secret that this List sort of wishes the Mainstream Classical World would fall into a big deep hole and stop bothering us and our culture while it helplessly tries to climb out (a pretty good metaphor, actually, for where it is in fact — and I mean pre-Pandemic). But when the Met puts together something like this — an unbelievably starry array of opera singers of a titanic magnitude that only the Met could assemble in bulk — it simply can't be ignored. So forget that more than half the material performed will probably be complete junk, forget that the whole proceeding will probably be drowned in a smug sanctimony that will have you running to the recommended cocktail below — the level of talent here has to be heard to be believed. After the live stream is over, the extravangaza will be available for streaming on demand on the Met's website until 6:30 PM Sunday.

Quince Ensemble Album Release
Free
https://www.quince-ensemble.com/albumrelease
Quince is as good a contemporary vocal ensemble as you could hope to hear: even more fun to listen to than they are to hang with. Tonight, you'll get to both, as they celebrate their new recording of David Lang's superb song cycle love fail (David apparently doesn't know how to use the shift key) with a performance of the piece, an interview with the composer — and extended shenanigans!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: A drink as fizzy as the Quinces: the Hayes Fizz. Rinse a chilled tall glass with Absinthe and put it in some ice. Pour 2 oz. Gin, 3/4 oz. each of lemon juice and Simple Syrup, and 2 oz. club soda into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake a lot, and strain into the Absinthe-rinsed tall glass. Garnish with an orange twist and a cocktail cherry.

Readers have complained that there is no statement of the aesthetic presuppositions underlying the idiosyncratic-seeming recommendations on this List. To that end, I direct your attention to thingNY, which could be the poster child for what this List is about: all the interest in formal and technical exploration of a New Music ensemble, with all the commitment to fun and immediacy of a pop band. They had been looking forward to 10th anniversary performances of their 2010 opera ADDDDDDDDD this month. Those obviously got scuttled, so they came up with this new piece they call SUBTRACTTTTTTTTT, which will toy with the vagaries of bandwidth broadcast with which we've all become too familiar over the last month.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: What cocktail already Listed this week does the Glandula del Mono riff on? Pour 2 oz. blanco Tequila, 1/2 oz. each of lemon juice, orange juice, and Grenadine, and 2 dashes of Absinthe into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake, and strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. This show deserves a few of these.

Every Friday, HERE is presenting a live stream of a theater artist sharing a work in some stage of completion. This week's — continuing on Saturday and Sunday — is particularly ambitious and exciting: a "Zoom opera" by Rob Handel (there's already a history of good operas by people named Handel), HERE honcho Kristen Marting, and one of the best opera composers out there, Kamala Sankaram. (Pop Quiz: what does Kamala Sankaram have in common with Ellen Degeneres? Both their names contain only one single vowel, repeated several times.) This one is so excited it will be repeated Saturday and Sunday!
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: A cocktail that's nice at 1, 3 and 7 PM: the Seaplane. Pour 1 oz. Gin and 1/2 oz. each of lemon juice and Simple Syrup, with 2 dashes of orange bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake, and strain into a chilled Champagne flute. Top with Champagne.

Funny how everything The Times complained about regarding this play about a future in which people are afraid of a toxic environment makes it now seem right on point. A reading by the original cast. (This List really likes the sophisticatedly goofy Adjusted Realists company.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: This play, which even its presenters tout as "jubilantly foul", seems like a good occasion for a Myra Breckinridge: pour 2 oz. Laphroaig (or other peaty) Scotch (we know from Thursday's Living Music: Pirate Radio show that at least Brad Balliett has some laying around), 3/4 oz. lime juice, and 1/4 oz. simple syrup, with 2 dashes of Absinthe, into a cocktail shaker with no ice (we call this dry-shaking), shake, and pour into a Pilsner glass or a tall glass filled with ice (preferably crushed). Now, if you used regular ice, stir (a LOT); if you used crushed ice, swizzle — which means, take a swizzle stick (now you know what they're for!), hold it between the palms of your two hands (which of course you've meticulously washed — and will wash again after you're done with this), and rotate the stick back and forth for a while until the ice has softened but not yet turned into a slush.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1889! Let's set the Wayback Machine to a time before there were Martinis, and have a Martinez: pour 1-1/2 oz. Old Tom Gin (you can use Dry Gin if you must), 1-1/2 oz. sweet Vermouth, and 1/4 oz. Maraschino liqueur into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, stir, and strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupé.

Your Compiler has little use for the folk-jazz-pop stylings of Becca Stevens — but your mileage may vary.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Another great Negroni variation: the Rosita. Pour 2 oz. Reposado Tequila and 1/2 oz. each of sweet and dry Vermouth and Campari, along with a dash of Angostura Bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, stir, and strain into a either an Old Fashioned glass over ice or a chilled Martini glass or coupe. MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Most committed cocktalians (what a horrible word) will agree that the Corpse Reviver No. 2 is one of the most purely delicious cocktails around — and all the principal ingredients are in equal measures, so you don't have to think too hard when making it: pour 1 oz. each of Gin, Lillet Blanc (or you can do what I do and sub in Cocchi Americano), and lemon juice, with a dash of Absinthe, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake, and strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupé.

The Skyped performances of this one-on-one theater piece, which has probably gotten more positive List subscriber feedback than anything I've ever recommended, are continuing indefinitely. When this 10-minute piece, with one actor performing in an enclosed space for one audience member, involving close interaction between actor and audience member exploring memory and the performer-audience relationship, played live around the City last year, it threatened to be a bit precious and potentially more than a bit intrusive .

Every Friday, HERE is presenting a live stream of a theater artist sharing a work in some stage of completion. I don't usually List works in progress (I've been burned too many times with semi-coherent semi-realized works in progress that then turned out to be great when completed) — but these are desperate times. And of course the artists on HERE's roster are fabulous. Like, for instance, this week's Aaron Landsman: a sharply analytic playwright whose work is also strangely moving (he wrote that Open House piece a decade or so ago, performed in various apartments throughout New York) (no, I couldn't get a ticket, either).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: That cocktail of cocktails, the Sidecar (another one that requires a little bit of work — but is SO worth it). Let's get the work out of the way first: spread some of the finest, most powdery sugar you have on a plate. Rub a lemon wedge around half of the rim of a chilled Martini glass or coupé and then dip the moistened side of the glass in the sugar, creating a half sugar rim. Now pour 1-1/2 oz. Brandy, 1 oz. Cointreau (or other orange liqueur), and 1/2 oz. lemon juice into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake, and strain into the glass. You're done.

An epic-length piece in the form of an opera by the late deep-listening guru Pauline Oliveros, performed by artists throughout the world and presented as a fundraiser for musicians' relief. Oliveros's work requires great concentration — and rewards it in spades: the sheer transporting beauty of slow-moving sound becomes overwhelming if you give in to it; you are taken to another, calmer place. I listened to some Oliveros last night, and I have to tell you that it was probably the most therapeutic thing I've done since The Quarantine set in (and trust me, I'm as opposed to the idea of music-as-therapy as anyone could be).

Here the big divisive issue is whether you use standard London Dry Gin as a base liquor or what the original recipe calls for, an old English style called Old Tom Gin (a slightly malted gin that's a bit more rounded and sweet than London Dry — part of the way between London Dry and Dutch Genever). Having drunk innumerable iterations of both versions — see what I do for you? — I can tell you that the original's still the greatest. (And it's that extra roundness and sweetness that makes this such a good transition-into-Spring cocktail.) So, into the ice-filled cocktail shaker go
2-1/4 oz. Old Tom Gin
3/4 oz. yellow Chartreuse
A dash of orange bitters
Stir, and strain into a Martini glass or coupé. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Edward Einhorn: Performance for One
THEATER
THURSDAY & SUNDAY, APRIL 2 & 5, 2020
10-minute intervals from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Untitled Theater Company #61
Skype
Free
http://www.untitledtheater.com/previous-productions/performance-for-one.html
More Skyped performances have been added of this one-on-one theater piece, which has probably gotten more positive List subscriber feedback than anything I've ever recommended. When this 10-minute piece, with one actor performing in an enclosed space for one audience member, involving close interaction between actor and audience member exploring memory and the performer-audience relationship, played live around the City last year, it threatened to be a bit precious and potentially more than a bit intrusive . But as a one-on-one Skype experience, it seems perfect — just what all we people ensconced alone in our apartments need right now. Most of the successive 10-minute slots are reserved in advance by email, but a few are left open for virtual walk-ins. I'll keep you posted as to any additional dates that are added.

Metropolis Ensemble: House Music
MUSIC
THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 2020
10:00 AM
Freehttps://metropolisensemble.org/house-music#house-music-home
Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Metropolis Ensemble will showcase ace musicians associated with its excellent self, or in any event friends of the ensemble, playing solo contemporary, classical, and newly commissioned pieces from home. I don't think this is live-streamed — I hope they're not making these musicians perform at 10 AM — but this is such a worthwhile initiative (everybody's getting paid) that it would wrong not to List it.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Coffee.

92nd Street Y Live Stream
Freehttps://www.92y.org/archives/pedrito-martinez
The Y is being coy as to whether this is a live performance or a canned stream of a show Pedrito Martinez did there last year. If it's the latter, as seems likely (it's hard to imagine assembling as large an ensemble as is to be featured here under current conditions in New York), it's technically not Listable. But Martinez is such a great musician — more than an amazing percussionist, he's a life force, someone whose music makes you feel better in a profound way — that I'm Listing this just in case. Deep Afro-Cuban excitement and joy.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: I hope you have access to mint leaves, cuz with this Cuban-to-the-core music, we're drinking Mojitos: in a highball glass, stir one (heaping) teaspoon of sugar into 1 oz. of lime juice, until the sugar has dissolved. Then, fill a quarter of the glass with ice. Rub mint leaves — take the amount you think you need, and then triple or quadruple it — around the rim of the glass, and then tear them in half and drop the pieces into the glass. Stir for as long as you now wash your hands. Then pour in 2 oz. of white Rum, almost but not quite fill the glass the glass with more ice, and pour in 1 oz. of club soda. Stir just a little, garnish with still more mint leaves (whole sprigs this time), and PARTY!

Happy Hour Hang: Kris Davis
MUSIC
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 2020
5:00 PM
Jazz Gallery
Zoom
$15
https://www.jazzgallery.org/calendar/kris-davis-happy-hour
Kris Davis has now risen to the very top level of jazz pianist/composers. You could call her angular asymmetrical style neo-Monkian — except that she doesn't really sound like Monk (or anyone else other than herself, for that matter). One thing she shares with Monk, though: no matter how outré her melodic and rhythmic conceptions might be, she's just about never not fun to listen to. It's no surprise this show is already sold out (and under these circumstances, cancellations seem unlikely). Look at the Jazz Gallery's calendar for the future shows in their Happy Hour Hang series (I'll be Listing them selectively).
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Let's honor Davis's (and my) borough of residence with a Brooklyn: stir 1-1/2 oz. Rye, 1/2 oz. dry Vermouth, 1/4 oz. Maraschino liqueur, and A LOT (go crazy!) of orange bitters in an ice-filled cocktail shaker, strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupé, garnish with an orange or lemon peel.
