Dayna Stephens is a little mainstream for what we do here, but he’s such a solid soulful saxman that it’s hard not to give him a nod. Tonight he revives the Art Blakey tradition of finding the best young players/composers he can and letting them rip (under his experienced tutelage).

This intriguing program had its inception when the question arose in Cleek Schrey’s mind: what if you played the venerable multidisciplinary Fluxus artist Yasunao Tone’s Anagram for Strings on daxophone? Well you might ask. This show includes a realization of the piece for daxophones (one played by Tone himself), violin (C. Spencer Yeh!), and voice (Gelsey Bell!!!!!!). Also, a new string quartet by Schrey (played by an equally starry ensemble) and some electronic rumblings by Tone.

One of the first shows during Quarantine that you could actually Go Out! to (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City (if you go over the weekend, you can get the fabulous pastrami).

The New York Phil hops aboard the walk-around-the-landscaped-space-with-soundtrack train. The highly allusive soundtrack was put together by Ellen Reid, who is one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

It looks this Contemporary/Alt Classical song recital could’ve been programed by me. Just to list a few of my very faves on the composers’ roster to give you a taste of what the expect: Angélica Negrón, Majel Connery, Will Healy, Juri Seo, and Aaron Siegel. Will be GREAT. (And another great show for people who think they don’t like classical music at all, or who like classical music but think they don’t like new classical music.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Thursday, the new Prospect Heights hotspot is Midwestern charmer Patti Ann’s. Sunday, stuff yourself at the fabulous Sri Lankan weekend buffet at Lakruana.

Aaron Copland once famously said (unless it was Virgil Thompson) that American music was music written by an American. So this program’s attempt to discover what makes music American might be misdirected. In any event, it’ll take us from inti figgis-vizueta to Copland himself (his canonical Appalachian Spring in its original chamber orchestration). Love ‘em both — even if I don’t see much connection.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: What could be more American than a pastrami on rye with some garlic fries on the side at Pastrami Queen?

OK, Pedrito Martinez can get a little MOR for this List. But the guy is just a monster percussionist, and when he stops trying to be crowd-friendly and goes full-out Afro-Cuban he is hot as hell.

One of those concept-concert extravaganzas that Yankee Diva Joyce DiDonato likes to put together, this time with staging and an actor and all. The program is supposed to celebrate nature, with music from the Baroque till now played by the Baroque Il Pomo d’Oro ensemble. But the main question this raises for me is, which will sound more bizarre played on Baroque period instruments: Ives or Mahler?
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Nice Izakaya Donburiya.

This show examines the life and works of the great English Madrigalist (even though he was actually Welsh) and composer of church and keyboard music Thomas Tomkins (who you might say insisted on remaining Tudor, musically speaking, even though he lived into the Stuart period). What with his living through the English Civil War, the Plague, and whatnot, the life was almost as exciting as the music.

A really great program of new stuff by City Ballet. Another chance to see Justin Peck’s piece to Caroline Shaw’s Partita for 8 Voices: whatever your qualms about the choreography (which is kind of schematically obvious), any chance to hear that music is welcome. Another chance to see Jamar Roberts’s piece to Wayne Shorter’s Eamanon (in this case the choreography is better than the music — to my taste, anyway). And two by Pam Tanowitz: a piece she did to more Shaw in which City Ballet dancers will be joined by guests from the Dance Theatre of Harlem; and a new piece to Ted Hearne’s wonderful Law of Mosaics.

Sydney Spann, a really fascinating (and surprisingly listenable) sound artist, creates an installation where baby monitors are used to diffuse her usual manipulated field recordings throughout the various cells of the space, with the audience being left to figure out how it all relates. Gee, do you think this has anything to do with Spann’s years as a child care provider (which left her with the firm belief that the bourgeois nuclear family is a contested space)?

Don’t know about this one, actually. In theory, put a bandoneon playing with a string quartet onstage and this Tango fanatic will be there — especially when the string quartet is of the stupendous quality of the Takács. But I don’t find Bryce Dessner to be much of a composer, and Clarice Assad seems to alternate between writing music of charm, appeal, and some astringency and writing mush. At least they’ll be doing the Ravel quartet (without the bandoneon).

Ryley Walker is an odd case: a folkyish singer-songwriter (often a quite good one, actually) (if you can imagine such a thing) who doubles as a rather amazing experimental guitarist. The people he’s playing with tonight create little doubt that we’ll be hearing his experimental side. Meanwhile, saxophonist Zoh Amba has been making a lot of noise on the local jazz scene since she moved here just in time for The Pandemic — and her accompanists are nonpareil.

Carnegie Hall
881 Seventh Avenue, Midtown, Manhattan
$16.50-$110
TICKETS + INFORMATION
Galina Ustvolskaya used to be one of the most puzzlingly overlooked composers of the 20th Century, but she’s finally coming into her own (not that she’s around to enjoy it — if in fact she’d care). Her work has immense pounding granitic power, but with a deep core of underlying spirituality. It is like nothing else. And Yefim Bronfman is just the Major Piano Star to play it. Which means he might not be the guy to play Chopin, also on the program (although this is BIG Chopin). As for the Beethoven, this will be one way to play him. But go for the Ustvolskaya.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: If Ustvolskaya were alive and attending this recital (and if I were her, I’d sure want to hear Yefim Bronfman play my work in Carnegie Hall), I have no doubt she’d go to famous dissident hangout Russian Samovar afterwards.

There is no hotter composer around than Jessie Montgomery, whose music is vivacious and bracing (and who understands strings inside out). Here it’s played — with a ringer by Astor Piazzolla and a group improvisation — by her old band, the excellent PUBLIQuartet, and her current (intermittent: being the hottest composer around takes up a lot of her time) band, Big Dog Little Dog (a duo with ace of bass Eleanore Oppenheim). As I’m sure I’ve already said ten thousand times, one of my biggest thrills during The Lockdown was seeing my living room and dining room windows appear in the video that Alarm Will Sound made of one of their signature pieces, John Adams’s Ten Thousand Birds, played remotely for remote consumption. That was a radically compressed version. Now we can hear the more expansive complete version in person, the way it was meant to be experienced — albeit not out in nature, as it was also meant to be experienced. Instead, we get one of those great nights where a performance spreads around the Armory’s vast Drill Hall. Can’t wait.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: It wouldn’t be an Armory show if I didn’t send you to Donahue’s Steak House afterwards: one of those absolutely wonderful places we have here in this City.

As I was leaving my row for intermission at Zankel Hall last week after hearing an excellent new piece by Hannah Kendall, I found myself stepping over Kendall herself. “This is what’s great about New Music concerts,” I thought to myself. “You don’t get to step over Brahms at the Philharmonic.” Now we get another new piece by this fresh voice who doesn’t avoid narrative, thematic (in the musical sense) density, or her Caribbean background. Also, among others, Eric Moe (whose lively music I for one am always very happy to hear) and George Walker, whose stuff just gets even better the more you hear it — and we’re thankfully getting to hear it a lot these days.

So I was chatting with composer Victoria Bond last summer, and she blew my mind by mentioning that she had sung on an old favorite album of mine, Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies’ The American Metaphysical Circus from 1969 (I guess Victoria was a Field Hippy). So I took it out and played for the first time in a few decades. And there was a 20-something Victoria jokingly pretending to be an elderly inmate of a retirement home. That joke may be several decades less funny now, but Bond is far from retired — as this world premiere, played by Percussia, shows. Also on the program are pieces by Dennis Tobenski and Alexis Lamb.

This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. Apparently no one listens to Ata Kek’s left-field rap/funk/highlife amalgam in Kek’s native Ghana. But they sure listen to it here. If you can resist this music, you’re a better person than me. Actually, you aren’t.

If a collaboration between David Byrne and Annie-B Parson were put on at BAM, I wouldn't think twice about Listing it (although I'd still feel constrained to make a comment about Boomer Nostalgia moving on to the Pop Avant-Garde). So I'm not gonna demerit this cuz it's on Broadway. AM I?
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Maybe the sushi at Sushi Lab is overelaborate and tries too hard. But it's there.

David Greenspan, the titanic imp of Downtown theater, breathes upon this antique comedy of manners and transforms it into one of the funniest and most exhilarating one-person shows you’ve ever seen. I saw him do an excerpt a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t believe it.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: A show this great deserves one of the best restaurants in New York: Basque sensation Ernesto’s (they have an all-day café if you go to a matinée).

”What are White people thinking?” asks the brilliant poet/playwright Claudia Rankine in this piece based on actual interactions she had with Whites in transitional spaces like airports. The creative team on this piece is pretty brilliant, too.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Delicious pan-African at Teranga.
